How does it work?
Trauma and/or longstanding postural problems or improper use of muscles lead to an irritation of the nervous system. This creates inflammation and pain. The body responds with muscle spasm and decreased movement in the area of the irritation. We D.C.'s refer to this loss of motion as a fixation or subluxation. Loss of movement decreases the amount of "good" information feeding into the brain (afferent proprioception), and increases the amount of bad info emanating out from the brain (efferent proprioception). With bad info the brain cannot make good decisions. Our job, as a chiropractor, is to restore proper motion in the joints via "adjustment" or manipulation of the joint complex. This stimulation to the joint can correct the faulty muscle pattern and posture that created the fixation or subluxation. This restores the "good" proprioception info into the brain allowing it to properly regulate your structure and it's functions.
Some of the causes of joint dysfunction are acute strain, chronic strain, injury, posture and degenerative joint disease.
Chiropractic treatment combined with specific activities and/or exercises helps to remove postural imbalances and structural misalignments that can accumulate in our bodies over time.
The customized care you receive from your chiropractor may help to improve your posture, muscle balance and mobility. It can also restore your sense of well being and help reduce pain.
